Tihs is the Singer 201k22 sewing machine, which is the later 'lightweight' version of the 201, introduced in the latter 1950s. It's still pretty heavy by moden standards!
It is made from cast aluminium, which makes it about half the weight of the original cast iron version although it's still pretty heavy by moden standards! Also it is in the two tone brown finish whereas the original was in black and gold. This machine was made in 1958.
As you would expect, it produces a perfect straight stitch with reverse (backtack) for finishing seams.
In my opinion, this was the best domestic machine that Singer ever built and incedentally it was the last model which was built to a standard rather than a price. It is reported that, in the last few years of it's production, the company lost approximatety $10 on every one they sold makig a change in policy essential.
You may see this machine advertised as 'Semi-industrial'. It most certainly IS NOT it is a high quality, beautifully engineered, quite heavy duty domestic machine. It can cope with denim, heavy curtain fabrics and even soft leather, with no trouble.
Unusually for a Singer machine there is a drop-feed function.
It will sew very heavy fabrics (convas etc.) and produce an acceptable stitch on them, but it would probably damage it and, if used for such work on a larger scale it would be completely ruined. With such a beautiful machine this woud be tragic.
The machine has a polished wood base and strawcloth covered wooden cover such as were very popular at the. time.
Fully serviced and guaranteed for 1 year (provided it is used as a domestic machine)
